One of the big projects we wanted to do when starting this site was to try out a bunch of do it yourself solar guides, and offer what we found to the public.
A couple of the guides we purchased were very inadequate. The rest were pretty similar, but had a few key differences. The differences were mainly in the ease of use, or how well the directions are explained. A couple of them really stood out as they were very user friendly and came with some solid bonuses that were not included in the others.
The cost for producing solar panels for all three guides was between $120 and $180, depending on how cheap you find the parts. No matter what, it is a fraction of the cost of purchasing new ones, not to mention the installation cost.

Michael Harvey, a California environmentalist, created a very well put together guide that even the not so mechanically inclined can use. Of the three of us here at Home Solar Energy that tested these guides, two of us are not very handy at all. This one really made that a non factor. All three guides have good diagrams. This one had very clear ones, and also included Video, which took the cake for us. It's much easier to learn something when you can see it done by someone right in front of you.We were also impressed with the tips on where to obtain some of the essential parts for free, or at least extremely cheap.This one gets the nod for Number 1 hands down.
And here's the kicker: It has a 60 day money back guarantee! If it doesn't work for you, they'll give you your money back with no questions asked (you won't want to though). They really stand behind their product.

Number 2:
Home Made Energy
This Guide was created by a man Named Bill Ford. He offers a solid guide, but a little less user friendly. We found it a bit harder to follow along than the Earth4Energy guide, and it did not include some of the nice money saving tips that Michael Harvey shared.
The guide does come with some bonus materials similar to Earth4Energy, such as a bonus guide for creating a wind turbine. If you are a bit more mechanically savvy, you will have no problem with this guide. But between the difficulty level and the lack of money saving tips compared to Earth4Energy, we rated this one Number 2.

Number 3:
Renewable Energy Solutions
This guide was put together by a family that converted their home over to solar energy and decided to teach others how they did it. While the quality of the guide is much better than a lot of the junk we went through and didn't bother to put in the review, it was still much less user friendly than Earth4Energy, and even Home Made Energy.
It offers similar bonuses, but unless you already have solid building project experience, it is not the best guide. And similar to Home Made Energy, it is mostly just a "How To" book, and does not include some of the valuable money saving tips.

Our Conclusion:
All three of the guides are very capable of teaching you how to build your own solar panels. They each go through the process from beginning to end of getting them wired to your home and start saving money.
We found that the Earth4Energy guide just offers much more and is definitely the most clear and user friendly. We found it to be a good bit more valuable than all the other guides we tested, and are proud to call it our Number 1 Choice. Combined with the 60 day money back guarantee, what have you got to lose?
